Pre-arrival Information
Q. Can children under the age of 14 travel alone to Vancouver?
A. Parents or guardians need to notify the airline if their child is under 14 and will be travelling alone. Please let the airline know that an unaccompanied minor will need supervision for the return travel. The airline will arrange for a flight attendant to help the child through customs and with boarding. When arranging for this special service, you will also need to let the airline know that a Bodwell representative will be picking the child up from the airport.
Q. Who will meet the students at the Vancouver International Airport?
A. At Vancouver Airport, a Bodwell representative will be waiting in the International Reception Lobby. They will have a Bodwell identification card and will be holding a large yellow sign with Bodwell on it. More detailed information will be provided in the Acceptance Package. Students will be escorted directly to UBC where they will check-in and meet their counsellors.
Q. How will parents know that their children have arrived safely?
A. We will notify parents by either fax or e-mail on the day that their children arrive in Vancouver. We will phone parents who do not have fax or e-mail, but phone confirmations may be delayed due to time zone differences.
Q. How will students keep their money and valuables safe?
A. Students are advised not to bring unnecessary valuables (for example, expensive watch or jewelry) to the program. Bodwell staff will offer to place their valuables in a safe in the office. The office and the safe will be locked up when there is no staff on duty. Students can access their possessions during office hours. We highly recommend that students place their valuables in the safe as they may often forget to lock their bedroom doors.
Q. How much money should students bring?
A. If the student is not planning to make major purchases, CAN$50-75 a week should be enough for souvenirs and spending money. We highly recommend that students bring most of their funds in the form of insured traveler's cheques, with only a small amount of cash. We will help students transfer these cheques to cash from time to time. Students who have not included the $15 airport tax in their airfare need to ensure that they have this amount available when they depart from Vancouver.

Q. How can parents contact their children at the UBC dormitory?
A. Parents can call the Bodwell Office at UBC and leave a message for their child. Staff will deliver the message to the student on the same day. The contact information for the Bodwell office at UBC is enclosed in the
Q.What if a friend or relative in Vancouver wants to visit and take students off-campus?
A. Parents or guardians will need to fill-out the Parent Consent form to authorize friends or relatives who would like to visit and take students off-campus for personal outings. Students will need to check out with a staff at the Bodwell office.
Q. How can students call home?
A. Students may use one of the many payphones located in the residence to call home. They will need to purchase a phone card in order to make long distance calls. Dormitory staff will be happy to help students with any questions.
Q. What happens if a student becomes sick or hurt?
A. Bodwell arranges medical insurance coverage for all students. In case of sickness, accident, injury or emergency, Bodwell staff will accompany the student to receive medical attention. There is a hospital on the university campus. Accommodation & Living
Q. How is security organized at the UBC dormitory?
A. Only authorized personnel and students will be given keys to access the dormitory buildings. Students are assigned to Camp Counsellors who stay in the same dormitory buildings as the students. In addition, there is a Dormitory Coordinator who is on duty in the evenings and weekends to assist with emergency and other matters. Security guards also patrol the grounds at night.
Q. Do most students have their own rooms at the dormitory?
A. Most rooms are single occupancy. We do have a small number of double rooms for younger students, who may feel more comfortable sharing a room with a companion.
Q. Where do the students eat and where can they buy food?
A. Students have 3 meals a day at the university cafeterias and an evening snack before bedtime. If they would like to buy snacks outside of meal times, there are many vending machines, stores, and restaurants near the dormitory.
Q. How do students do their laundry?
A. There are coin-operated washing and drying machines in the dormitory. Students can purchase a washing card from the office and we provide students with washing detergent. Camp Counsellors will assist the students in doing their laundry regularly.
Q. Is there a damage deposit?
A. Yes, upon arrival, Bodwell's office staff will ask students to deposit CDN$100 in a sealed envelope locked in the office. This deposit will be refunded in full to the student upon departure if no damage has been done to their room and no intentional vandalism to the residence facilities.
RULES & REGULATIONS
1) Students must abide by the schedules and programs arranged by Bodwell College. Permission to be absent will be granted by our staff in cases of sickness, injury, or acceptable personal reasons.
2) Boys are not allowed to be in the girl's residences and girls are not allowed to be in boy's residences. Students can meet in communal areas.
3) Illegal substances, alcohol, gambling and weapons are not permitted in any circumstances.
4) Students committing any act or behavior that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of other students or staff will not be tolerated.
Depending on the severity of the infraction, students will be given warnings and different consequences at the administration's discretion. Bodwell College reserves the right to dismiss students from the program without any refund in extreme cases of infractions. |
